Being a health conscious
Acupuncturist, I tried to make the ingredients more nutritious. Experiment
with using Sucanat instead of white sugar. Use whole wheat pastry flour
instead of white flour. Or, do half whole wheat pastry and half unbleached
white flour (preferably organic). Walnuts are my favorite, but you may
substitute your favorite. You could substitute rice milk and Sucanat
for the frosting. And of course use as many of the ingredients in organic
form as you can find.
Sorry I don't have
any saucy stories like the ones in your book. I just remember Christmas
in the 50's with lots of home made cookies, noisy relatives (women in
the kitchen, men watching the football game smoking and cussing), building
forts in the snow and presents, that by todays standards, would be considered
archaic. (Like the football game that had a board that vibrated to move
the men and the q-tipped size felt football.)
My favorite was
when I got my $25 Trailblazer acoustic guitar. The strings were so high
they could make your flingers bleed. I drove everybody crazy playing
the one chord that I knew. (It got more interesting when I learned a
second chord.) Things were different then. My parents begged me to STOP
practicing. Funny how that turned out to be a a career for 20 years.
Even though I'm
now a Licensed Acupuncturist, I can't think of a better cure for what
ails you than a large dose of Italian Coco Balls and a glass of milk.
It may not heal the body but it does wonders for the taste buds and
the soul.
Come to think of
it, nostalgia makes me feel pretty good too. And there are no calories!
